ACQ Pressure Treated Lumber

Lumber that is treated with Alkaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ) preservatives to protect the wood against decay. ACQ lumber, however, must still have a sealant applied post-install of the deck to further guard against weather-related elements such as rain, sun, and snow. It is often recommended to add a stain to the deck to help with its final surface appearance and longevity.

Cedar Lumber

Cedar is a more durable wood naturally resistant to rot, decay, and termites and pests, tends to last longer due to its resistance to moisture absorption, and doesn’t warp or split as easily, thus requiring less maintenance. Cedar provides a much more aesthetically pleasing look versus ACQ lumber and, while a sealant is recommended to assist with increasing the wood’s longevity, a cedar deck can easily be left as its natural color post-install for a beautiful appearance.

Composite Material

Composite material decks provide the look of real wood without the maintenance and upkeep of a wooden deck and are designed to last for many years. We utilize products from either TimberTech or Trex depending on the customer’s needs, with both types providing a beautiful and high-quality finish when complete. Composite decking is available in a variety of colors, with wood, composite, or aluminum railing options available to complement your deck’s style.

Before you hire, get informed. These guides walk through what to expect, what to ask, and how to make confident decisions about your deck project.

How long does it take to build a deck in Kansas City?

Timeline varies depending on the size, material, and complexity of the project. Smaller platform decks are generally completed faster than multi-level builds or projects that include pergolas or roof coverings. Your contractor should provide a project timeline as part of your estimate.

Do I need a permit to build a deck in Kansas City?

In most cases, yes. Kansas City and surrounding municipalities require permits for deck construction to ensure the build meets local code. Kansas City Top Tier Exteriors handles the permitting process as part of every installation.

What is the best decking material for Kansas City's climate?

Composite decking handles Kansas City's hot humid summers and freeze-thaw winters better than most wood options with minimal upkeep. Cedar is a strong natural wood alternative. Pressure-treated pine works well on a budget when annual maintenance is kept up.
